Fall Back, Feel Good: Your Simple Fall Health Checklist
The leaves are turning, the air is crisp, and this weekend the clocks fall back an hour. That extra hour is a great reminder to take care of a few small things that make a big difference this time of year
Here's a simple checklist from our team at Palisade Pharmacy to help you and your family feel your best all season.
1. Get your flu shot
Flu season usually ramps up in late fall and peaks in winter. The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for almost everyone 6 months and older. Your body needs about two weeks to build protection, so now is a great time to get yours. You can stop by our pharmacy anytime NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED.
Tip: Bring the whole family in together and check it off everyone's list in one trip.
2. Ease into the time change
Even one hour can throw off your sleep. To help your body adjust:
Get outside for some morning sunlight
Keep your bedtime and wake-up time steady
Cut back on caffeine in the afternoon
Put screens away 30 minutes before bed
3. Clean out your medicine cabinet
The time change is a handy reminder to check what's in your cabinet.
Toss anything expired, especially cold, flu and allergy medicines
Restock basics like a thermometer, pain and fever relievers, and tissues
Make a current list of your medicines and vitamins to keep on hand
Not sure how to get rid of old medicines safely? Just ask us. We're happy to help.
4. Check your prescriptions before the holidays
The holidays get busy fast. Take a minute now to see which prescriptions will need a refill in the next couple of months, especially if you're traveling. Planning ahead means fewer last-minute trips and less stress.
5. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
This one isn't about medicine, but it matters just as much. Many safety experts suggest testing your detectors and swapping batteries when the clocks change. It only takes a few minutes and helps keep your home safe all winter.
6. Keep up the healthy basics
Simple habits go a long way during cold and flu season:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Drink plenty of water, even when it's chilly
Keep moving with a walk around town on a sunny afternoon
Stay home when you're sick to help protect your neighbors
